Zhang He (died 231 AD), courtesy name Junyi, was a renowned military general who served under the warlord Cao Cao and later the Wei dynasty. Originally a subordinate of Han Fu and then Yuan Shao, Zhang He defected to Cao Cao following the Battle of Guandu. He was highly regarded for his tactical versatility, his ability to adapt to complex battlefield conditions, and his longevity in service, eventually becoming one of the Five Elite Generals of Wei.

Throughout his long career, Zhang He participated in numerous critical campaigns, including those against the western warlords and the persistent invasions by Shu Han. He is perhaps best remembered for his decisive victory against Ma Su at the Battle of Jieting, a triumph that severely crippled Zhuge Liang’s first Northern Expedition. Zhang He was killed in an ambush by Shu forces at Mumen in 231 AD, a loss that was deeply mourned by the Wei court. He remains one of the most respected and tactically astute generals in the history of the Three Kingdoms.
