Biography & Historical Record
Zhao Shu was a military officer who served under the warlord Lu Bu during the turbulent late Eastern Han dynasty. Operating as a subordinate commander, Zhao Shu participated in regional military deployments in Xu Province to resist the expanding power of Cao Cao.
In late 198 AD (the third year of Jian’an), Cao Cao launched a major eastern campaign to completely crush Lu Bu’s regime in Xu Province. During the campaign, Cao Cao’s elite vanguard general Xu Huang was tasked with sweeping through and pacifying the outer garrisons and strongholds surrounding the provincial capital of Xiapi. Confronted by Xu Huang’s overwhelming force and superior tactical command, Zhao Shu and his fellow subordinate officer Li Zou realized that their garrison was outmatched and incapable of mounting a successful resistance. Recognizing the futility of further fighting, Zhao Shu and Li Zou surrendered their troops and fortifications to Xu Huang. Although some secondary historiographical texts erroneously date this surrender to 196 AD, historians confirm that the event occurred during the decisive 198 AD Siege of Xiapi. Following his submission to Cao Cao’s forces, Zhao Shu fades entirely from official historical records.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Zhao Shu appears during the military operations surrounding Cao Cao’s invasion of Xu Province. As a subordinate officer under Lu Bu, Zhao Shu is assigned to guard outer defensive positions protecting Xiapi. When Cao Cao’s general Xu Huang leads a swift vanguard sweep across the commanderies, Zhao Shu and Li Zou recognize that Lu Bu’s perimeter is collapsing and surrender to Xu Huang, illustrating the gradual disintegration of Lu Bu’s officer corps prior to the final encirclement at Xiapi.
