Biography and Historical Record of Deng Long
Deng Long (邓龙) was a military officer serving under Huang Zu, the Administrator of Jiangxia under warlord Liu Biao during the tumultuous late Eastern Han dynasty. Stationed along vital river waterways, he played an active military role in defending Jing Province from eastward expansion during the turbulent Three Kingdoms era.
In 206 AD (the 11th year of Jian’an), Huang Zu ordered him to lead several thousand infantry and naval troops to attack Cangling (the Chaisang region), attempting to penetrate Sun Quan’s defensive perimeter. In response, Sun Quan dispatched his grand commander Zhou Yu to launch a decisive counteroffensive. Zhou Yu’s elite forces outmaneuvered the invading force, utterly defeating the fleet and capturing the commanding officer alive. This capture dealt a heavy blow to Jiangxia’s naval defenses along the Yangtze River, directly paving the way for Sun Quan’s eventual destruction of Huang Zu two years later.
Depiction in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the officer appears in Chapter 38 as a trusted river vanguard. Alongside Chen Ji, he is stationed at the river fortress of Xiakou to block the invading Eastern Wu fleet with armored river transports (mengchong) secured by thick iron cables.
“Ling Tong, eager to avenge his father Ling Cao, leaped onto the flagship amid a hail of arrows. Raising his blade, he struck down the commander on the deck, casting his head into the river.” — Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Chapter 38
Sun Quan’s vanguard warriors, Ling Tong and Dong Xi, orchestrated a daring commando assault against this naval barrier. Dong Xi sliced through the iron mooring lines, while Ling Tong boarded the flagship to slay Deng Long in fierce hand-to-hand combat, sparking mass panic among the Jiangxia fleet.
Historical Significance and Legacy
Although historical texts preserve limited records about Deng Long, his engagements illustrate the intense regional clashes for naval dominance over the Yangtze River before the Battle of Red Cliffs. His defeat underscored the rising naval supremacy of Eastern Wu in southern China.
