Biography & Historical Record
Dong Xi (died 215 AD), courtesy name Yuanwei, was a military general of the state of Eastern Wu during the late Eastern Han dynasty and Three Kingdoms period. Hailing from Yuyao Commandery in Kuaiji, Dong Xi was known for his tall stature, immense physical strength, and exceptional courage in battle. He initially joined the regional warlord Sun Ce when Sun Ce expanded his control into Kuaiji, quickly winning favor due to his martial prowess and capability in leading troops. He participated in numerous pacification campaigns across Jiangdong, successfully suppressing local rebellions and bandit strongholds, including the forces of Huang Chong and various insurgent groups.
Following Sun Ce’s untimely death, Dong Xi continued to serve Sun Quan with absolute loyalty, becoming one of the most reliable and ferocious vanguard commanders of Eastern Wu. He played an instrumental role in major military campaigns, including the expeditions against Huang Zu and the historic Battle of Red Cliffs against Cao Cao’s invading fleets. His defining moment of bravery occurred during naval skirmishes where he commanded flagship vessels under adverse weather conditions, demonstrating unyielding tenacity. In 215 AD, during the Battle of Hefei, when Cao Cao’s general Zhang Liao launched a sudden, devastating surprise assault that shattered the Wu lines and trapped Sun Quan’s forces near Xiaoshi Bridge, Dong Xi fought desperately to rescue his lord and secure the escape route. During the ferocious melee, his ship was capsized or destroyed under heavy assault, and Dong Xi perished in action, drowning or falling in battle. Deeply saddened by his loss, Sun Quan mourned him profoundly, and his legacy endured as a symbol of ultimate valor and devotion to Eastern Wu.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Dong Xi is introduced as a fierce and stalwart warrior under the banner of Sun Ce and later Sun Quan. He takes part in many pivotal military campaigns across Jiangdong and plays a crucial frontline role during the wars against Huang Zu in Jing Province. In the historical naval confrontation at Red Cliffs, Dong Xi commands key fighting ships against Cao Cao’s armada. Later in the novel, his dramatic final stand takes place during the defense of Hefei in Chapter 68, where Zhang Liao executes a lightning surprise attack. As panic spreads and the Wu army is thrown into absolute disarray, Dong Xi leads his men with extraordinary bravery to hold the line, meeting a heroic end when his vessel is overwhelmed and destroyed in the chaos.
