Biography & Historical Record
Dian Man (dates of birth and death unknown) was a military officer who served the state of Cao Wei during the late Eastern Han dynasty and Three Kingdoms period. He was the son of Dian Wei, the legendary, fierce bodyguard of Cao Cao. Following the tragic Battle of Wan Castle (Wancheng) in 197 AD—where Dian Wei died heroically holding off enemy forces to cover Cao Cao’s escape—Cao Cao was deeply grieved by his loss. In recognition of Dian Wei’s supreme sacrifice, Cao Cao appointed Dian Man to the post of Gentleman of the Household (Sima/Silang).
As Dian Man grew older, he inherited his father’s incredible physical strength, martial prowess, and commanding presence. Recognizing his inherited potential and loyalty, Cao Cao appointed Dian Man as a Major (Sima) and later elevated him to the position of Commandant (D尉). Following the founding of Cao Wei, Cao Pi rewarded Dian Man’s lifelong family loyalty by granting him the title of Marquis of a Secondary Village (Guannei Hou). Throughout his military career, Dian Man served as a trusted garrison commander and military officer, continuing his father’s legacy of steadfast devotion to the Cao family.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Dian Man is featured in Chapter 16 and Chapter 110. Introduced in Chapter 16 following the catastrophic ambush at Wan Castle, Cao Cao openly weeps for Dian Wei, holds a solemn sacrifice in his memory, and personally adopts Dian Man into his inner circle, granting him official rank and military stipends. Later in Chapter 110, Dian Man serves as a stalwart officer under Cao Wei, fulfilling his duty as a military commander defending the Wei capital and imperial borders.
