Biography & Historical Record
Cao Anmin (died 197 AD) was a military officer and key family member who served under his uncle, the warlord Cao Cao, during the turbulent late Eastern Han dynasty. Born into the prominent Cao clan, he was the son of Cao Cao’s elder brother. Cao Anmin served as an aide and officer within Cao Cao’s inner staff during the central campaigns to pacify the Central Plains.
In 197 AD, Cao Anmin accompanied Cao Cao on his campaign against the warlord Zhang Xiu at Wan Castle (Wancheng). Upon Cao Cao’s initial arrival, Zhang Xiu surrendered without a fight. Shortly thereafter, Cao Anmin brought Lady Zou—the beautiful widow of Zhang Xiu’s deceased uncle Zhang Ji—to Cao Cao’s attention, arranging a private meeting that resulted in Cao Cao taking her as a concubine. Humiliated and deeply resentful of this insult to his family honor, Zhang Xiu secretly plotted a sudden night ambush under the strategic guidance of Jia Xu. The surprise night attack caught Cao Cao’s forces completely off guard. In the chaotic, bloody battle that ensued, Cao Anmin fought valiantly beside his cousin Cao Ang and the legendary bodyguard Dian Wei to secure Cao Cao’s escape, ultimately being cut down and killed amidst the fleeing garrison forces.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Cao Anmin appears in Chapter 16 during the Battle of Wan Castle. Following Zhang Xiu’s initial surrender, Cao Anmin inquires whether Cao Cao desires female companionship in camp and informs him of Lady Zou’s extraordinary beauty. Cao Anmin leads a contingent of guards to fetch Lady Zou from Zhang Ji’s former estate and brings her to Cao Cao’s quarters. This fateful action directly triggers Zhang Xiu’s furious night attack. When Zhang Xiu’s forces set fire to the camp and breach the perimeter, Cao Anmin desperately flees on foot alongside Cao Cao’s retreat. Outnumbered and surrounded by Zhang Xiu’s surrounding spear cavalry, Cao Anmin is repeatedly hacked to pieces and killed by enemy soldiers while attempting to cross the outer perimeter.
