Biography & Historical Record
Mao Hui was a military general who served under both Cao Cao and Lu Bu during the turbulent late Eastern Han dynasty. In 194 AD, taking advantage of Cao Cao’s grand expeditionary campaign against Tao Qian in Xu Province to avenge his father Cao Song, the strategists Chen Gong and Zhang Miao launched a major rebellion in Yan Province. They secretly welcomed Lu Bu to assume control over the region. At the time, Mao Hui and fellow general Xu Xi were local commanders serving under Cao Cao’s administration in Yan Province. Caught in the widespread revolt, both Mao Hui and Xu Xi defected from Cao Cao, surrendering their local troops to align with Lu Bu’s warlord faction.
In 199 AD, Lu Bu’s forces suffered a catastrophic defeat at the Siege of Xiapi, culminating in Lu Bu’s capture and execution at White Melon Tower by Cao Cao. Fearing Cao Cao’s ruthless retribution against defectors, Mao Hui and Xu Xi fled from Xu Province to Langya Commandery. There, they sought sanctuary under Zang Ba, a former leader of the Mount Tai bandits who had recently submitted to Cao Cao and been recognized as a regional administrator.
When Cao Cao discovered that the two defectors were taking refuge with Zang Ba, he sent a strict imperial order demanding that Zang Ba decapitate Mao Hui and Xu Xi and send their severed heads to the capital for execution. However, Zang Ba was a man of deep martial honor and integrity. He steadfastly refused Cao Cao’s envoy, stating: ‘The reason I was able to establish myself in the region is that I keep my word. Mao Hui and Xu Xi entrusted their lives to me, and I cannot betray their trust to save myself.’ Zang Ba then personally traveled to meet Cao Cao to plead for their lives. Cao Cao was deeply moved by Zang Ba’s unwavering loyalty and righteousness. Laughing hearty praise, Cao Cao issued a full amnesty for both Mao Hui and Xu Xi, pardoning their lives and subsequently appointing both men as local Grand Administrators under the Cao Wei imperial administration.

Following Lu Bu’s downfall at Xiapi in Chapter 19, Mao Hui flees alongside Xu Xi to seek shelter under Zang Ba in Langya. When Cao Cao demands their execution, Zang Ba’s steadfast defense of his comrades sways Cao Cao to spare Mao Hui, illustrating Cao Cao’s political flexibility and respect for martial honor in consolidating his northern empire.
