The Virtuous Life and Service of Zhang Fan
During the collapse of the Han central authority, warlords vied for talented administrators. When the ambitious warlord Yuan Shu attempted to summon him, Zhang Fan feigned illness to decline corrupt patronage and sent his younger brother Zhang Cheng instead. Later, while taking refuge, mountain bandits captured his son and nephew. Moved by extraordinary family devotion, he offered his own life in exchange, which struck such deep remorse into the bandits that they released both captives unconditionally.
Following the northern pacification, Chancellor Cao Cao held immense reverence for Zhang Fan, treating him with extraordinary courtesy rather than as a mere subordinate. He appointed the scholar as Senior Imperial Advisor and Regular Mounted Attendant. Whenever military expeditions departed, Cao Cao entrusted domestic administration and judicial consultations to him. Furthermore, the future emperor Cao Pi was explicitly commanded to treat the elder statesman with the highest filial and instructional respect.
