The Life and Rebellion of Wei Feng
Wei Feng (courtesy name Zijing) was a charismatic scholar and official during the turbulent end of the Han dynasty and the dawn of the Three Kingdoms era. Hailing from Pei Commandery, he possessed immense rhetorical brilliance and intellectual magnetism that captivated the ruling elite in Ye, the administrative heart of Cao Cao’s domain.
Appointed as Assistant to the Chancellor through high recommendations from prominent statesmen such as Zhong Yao, he quickly gathered a massive following among young nobles and intellectuals. However, seasoned advisors like Liu Ye and Fu Xun warned that his grandiloquent rhetoric masked dangerous political ambitions, predicting disaster for his followers.
In the autumn of 219 AD, seizing the military crisis caused by Guan Yu’s southern offensive at Fancheng, an audacious coup was orchestrated in Ye. Conspiring with army commander Chen Yi and numerous noble scions, the plot intended to seize the ducal residence and overthrow the regional administration. Before the plan could be executed, Chen Yi panicked and confessed the entire scheme to Cao Pi, who was governing Ye.
Cao Pi suppressed the insurrection with swift ruthlessness. The conspirators were captured and executed, triggering a sweeping purge that eliminated prominent figures such as the sons of Wang Can and Zhang Xiu. The dramatic rebellion led by Wei Feng marked one of the final internal challenges to the emerging state of Cao Wei. In literary tradition, Wei Feng is briefly commemorated in historical chronicles and Chapter 73 of the classic novel as a tragic symbol of Han loyalty and scholar ambition.
