Biography and Career of Xue Xu
Xue Xu was an influential official and military commander of Eastern Wu during the Three Kingdoms era. As the eldest son of the distinguished scholar-official Xue Zong, he inherited an esteemed intellectual pedigree and demonstrated remarkable strategic insight in civil administration and military governance.
During a diplomatic mission to Shu Han in 261 AD, Xue Xu astutely observed the severe political decay caused by the eunuch Huang Hao, correctly predicting to Emperor Sun Xiu that their allied state stood on the brink of ruin. Later, under Sun Hao’s reign, he held prestigious ranks including General of the Left and General of Resolute Cavalry. Leading a major counter-offensive in 269 AD, Xue Xu coordinated with allied commanders to push back the forces of the Jin Dynasty in southern Jiaozhi, though he succumbed to illness on the return march in 271 AD.
