Xun You (荀攸, Tuân Du), courtesy name Gongda, was one of the most brilliant military strategists and statesmen of the late Eastern Han Dynasty, serving as a chief advisor to the warlord Cao Cao (曹操, Tào Tháo). He was born in Yingyin County, Yingchuan Commandery (present-day Xuchang, Henan Province) into the prestigious Xun clan. He was a nephew of the famous strategist Xun Yu (荀彧, Tuân Úc), although Xun You was actually six years older than him due to generational order.

Xun You’s early career began in the Han imperial court. During the chaotic reign of Dong Zhuo (董卓, Đổng Trác), Xun You was appointed as a Gentleman of the Yellow Gate. Witnessing Dong Zhuo’s tyranny, Xun You secretly conspired with He Xun (何顒, Hà Ngung), Zheng Tai (鄭泰, Trịnh Thái), and others to assassinate Dong Zhuo. However, the plot was leaked, and Xun You was imprisoned. Throughout his incarceration, he remained remarkably calm and composed, while his co-conspirator He Xun died of fear and anxiety. Xun You was only released after Dong Zhuo was killed by Lu Bu (呂布, Lã Bố) in 192 AD.

In 196 AD, upon the recommendation of his clan uncle Xun Yu (荀彧, Tuân Úc), Xun You joined Cao Cao (曹操, Tào Tháo). Recognizing his exceptional strategic acumen, Cao Cao appointed him as Master of Writing and military advisor. From then on, Xun You became one of Cao Cao’s most trusted confidants, accompanying him on almost every major military expedition.

During the Battle of Xiapi in 198 AD, when Cao Cao’s forces grew weary of besieging Lu Bu (呂布, Lã Bố), Xun You and Guo Jia (郭嘉, Quách Gia) devised the plan to divert the waters of the Yi and Si rivers to flood the city, which successfully shattered Lu Bu’s morale and led to his capture. At the decisive Battle of Guandu in 200 AD, Xun You formulated the diversion tactics that decoyed Yan Liang (顏良, Nhan Lương) and Wen Chou (文醜, Văn Sú) to their deaths, effectively relieving the siege of Baima. He also strongly urged Cao Cao to accept the defection of Xu You (許攸, Hứa Du) and launch the high-stakes raid on the Yuan clan’s supply depot at Wuchao, which broke the stalemate and secured Cao Cao’s victory over Yuan Shao (袁紹, Viên Thiệu).

Xun You was famed for his deep intellect and extreme discretion. He was credited with formulating twelve major military strategies, which he only shared with his close friend Zhong Yao (鍾繇, Chung Dao). Unfortunately, Zhong Yao passed away before completing the compilation of these strategies, leaving them lost to history. Cao Cao once praised Xun You, stating: “Xun Gongda is a man of outer weakness but inner strength, outer cowardice but inner courage, outer foolishness but inner wisdom. He does not boast of his merits, nor does he flaunt his achievements.” Xun You died of illness in 214 AD during an expedition against Sun Quan (孫權, Tôn Quyền) and was posthumously honored as Marquis Jing (敬侯).

Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

In La Guanzhong’s 14th-century historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Xun You is depicted in a manner highly consistent with historical records, forming a core part of Cao Cao’s elite council of advisors alongside Xun Yu (荀彧, Tuân Úc), Guo Jia (郭嘉, Quách Gia), Cheng Yu (程昱, Trình Dục), and Jia Xu (賈詡, Giả Hủ). He is portrayed as a calm, far-sighted strategist whose counsel repeatedly saves Cao Cao’s campaigns from disaster.

The novel dramatizes his role in the northern campaigns and his tragic end. In Chapter 66, when Cao Cao seeks to elevate himself to the status of King of Wei (魏王), Xun You openly voices his opposition, pointing out that such an action would cross the line of loyalty to the Han Dynasty. This mirrors the earlier opposition of Xun Yu, who died under mysterious circumstances. Hearing Xun You’s objection, Cao Cao remarks coldly, “Does this man wish to follow in Xun Yu’s footsteps?” Overcome with grief, anxiety, and fear of Cao Cao’s wrath, Xun You falls severely ill and dies shortly after. The novel uses his death to highlight Cao Cao’s growing tyranny and the tragic plight of loyal Han ministers who helped build his power.
